narrowing my focus

Porcelain w wild iron inclusions, embedded glav steel wire, bisque fired; 6” x 6” x 1”; 2025.

This fall I have joined the Technical Mastery class led by Tara Thacker. The goal is to focus on a technically challenging aspect or process to learn or improve upon and test, test, test. Then create something fabulous. The key is that ‘something’ should reach a high bar of being well designed and portfolio quality. This is anything but a linear process.

As per usual I am sorting through a plethora of ideas and possible directions so must zero in on what I really want out of this brief supported opportunity. It appears I only want to use materials that don’t play well with each other. Adhering to my known firing process, porcelain of choice* and reconciling with the fact that the materials I want to include all have different melting temperatures.

*I will be using my usual porcelain which is Laguna 570 with included wild iron and a reactive cobalt slip surface, fired to ^10-11, gas reduction firing process . This is my comfort zone and frankly where it’s at for me so I’m going with this one dependable entity.
