a little about me…

Mid-coast Maine is a never ending source of inspiration and peace for me: the landscape, salt air, and beauty of the seasons. It’s been many years now that I have had my hands in clay yet it still feels like a new beginning each time I enter my studio.

I’ve come a long way from my days in landscape architecture yet I feel those aesthetics are more present in my work today than ever before. Working directly with natural elements, exploring their intrinsic qualities and how they reveal themselves both on the wheel and in the kiln are at once meditative and fulfilling. It’s soulful work and I enjoy it immensely.

Artist’s Statement

“When I sit down at my potter’s wheel I try to abandon any notions of the perfect pot. I instead pursue an exploration in which the only guiding principle is ‘what if?’  A dynamic call and response conversation between the clay and me develops; an exploration of balance and structural integrity in which both sides seek equilibrium.

This game of sorts continues beyond the wheel with the addition of found elements such as iron and bits of stone, reactive surface treatments, and extreme firing conditions pushing the process even further. Many of my pieces don’t survive this process but those that do exhibit an ephemeral beauty only the fire can elicit and I cherish.

This quest for stability and sincerity is a reflection of my own inner call and response to love, loss, changes in family structure, career, culture and climate. It’s a process of choosing what to accept and what to fight for in my own life.”
