Bioforms

Bioform #1 sides a & b; galvanized steel wire, porcelain with abaca, sisal aka burlap, and mulberry fibers, linen thread, and binder; 48” x 30”dia, 2025.

My fascination with suspended wire sculptures has led me in the surreal direction of what I call Bioforms. They are vaguely familiar anthropomorphic bodies that look a bit like something found floating in the ocean, hanging beneath a garden leaf, or in an alien invasion movie.

Here are two views of the same form. It is delicate, exceedingly lightweight at approx 5lbs, yet very strong much like a form found nature might be. The layering of porcelain paperclay and sisal aka burlap tightly encloses the inner structure revealing the subtleties of its form which is difficult to see otherwise.

Progression of the form:

Top to bottom, left to right: Sketchbook, wire sculpting, draping and sewing the burlap, wetting and shrinking, first coat of porcelain paperclay, closing seams, subsequent layers of porcelain, layering of mulberry fiber.
