Parts to the whole
In pursuing my own design aesthetic a tendency towards minimalism has clearly made itself known. It fascinates me now to realize how influential viewing art in childhood can be. That the Abstract Expressionists I grew up loving would unwittingly emerge so strongly in my own work many years later is surprising.
This piece with its methodical if not tedious lines, calculated spacing, all layered with texture and materiality speaks to me. It feeds my love of symmetry and asymmetry, organization and happenstance. There is also a deeply emotional element embedded here in the rusty springs left behind in the ashes of the ritually burned art journals of my children that I could not otherwise part with.
